Hazard assessment

One component of the alternative product is classified by the producer. The concentration of this classified substance in the alternative product is < 1%. The classification is as follows:  H315: Causes skin irritation, H319: Causes serious eye irritation, H400: Very toxic to aquatic life, and H412: Harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. According to the producer, alternative substances are not listed on the Substance Database according to SUBSPORT Screening Criteria (SDSC). The alternative product is free of PFC.
There is no data about the substituted fluorinated product.

Substitution description

DWR finishes are essential for a large variety of textiles where water and stain protection is a key part of the overall offering.  This case is part of the overall target to phase-out the use of DWR technology based on polymeric substances to which perfluoroalkyl groups are attached.  In this effort there has been a close collaboration with supply chain partners to research and implement alternative technology manufactured with non-fluorinated, renewably sourced, plant-based material that can be replenished naturally over time.  More specifically there has been cooperation with Chemours and Huntsman to introduce this new technology utilizing Zelan™ R3.

The alternative product is not a classified mixture according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.  The key toxicological information for the product as it is used at the textile mill/finisher can be found in the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) in Section 11 and 12.  The producer conducted a self-assessment according to the criteria set for the in the GHS Column Model (http://www.dguv.de/medien/ifa/en/pra/ghs_spaltenmodell/ghs_column_model.pdf), which relies on hazard data provided in the product safety data sheet.  Zelan™ R3 rated “negligible” in both the “Acute Health Hazards” and “Chronic Health Hazards” categories and rated “medium” in the “Environmental Hazards” categories.

Other data for the alternative product:  Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5) = 0.4mg/g Product; Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) = 341mg/g Product; ready biodegradability amounts to 25.4% after 28 days (Carbon Dioxide Evolution Test (OECD Test Guideline 301B); inherent biodegradability amounts to 100% after 28 days (Zahn-Wellens/EMPA Test (OECD Guideline 302B). More information about the alternative product can be found here: https://www.chemours.com/Teflon_Fabric_Protector_Partners/en_US/products/zelan.html

ALDI, Chemours, Huntsman and ALDI´s supplier collaborate to bring this solution to the market.
In collaboration with the textile mill, Chemours and Huntsman were able to fine tune the application recipe so that the finishing process is running effectively and efficiently. No major difference in the water repellency performance of fabric finished with Zelan(tm) R3 vs. the replaced technology were seen.  However, oil repellency and associated stain repellency cannot be achieved with non-fluorinated DWR technology.

Case/substitution evaluation

This case story from a producer  describes the substitution of PFCs containing textile finish with an alternative PFC free finish. The products’ MSDS have been disclosed to SUBSPORT. However, it was not possible to perform a full hazard assessment (e.g. potentially hazardous monomers etc.) as the full compositions are unknown to SUBSPORT. According to the producer, alternative substances are not listed on the SDSC. The PFC free finish might be a feasible alternative also for other PFC containing products, which can have severe negative environmental and health impacts.
